A Garden of National Significance

TreeChurch and Gardens has been assessed as a Garden of National Significance with a rating of 5 stars by the New Zealand Gardens Trust.

Visitor Information

The TreeChurch and Gardens are privately owned and maintained by Chris and Bev Gatenby, who continue the legacy started by garden creator Barry Cox. What began as a personal project has grown into a unique place of reflection and beauty, shaped by a deep appreciation for trees, church architecture, and garden design.

We welcome visitors to enjoy the space respectfully and at their own pace.

  • The TreeChurch is a place of quiet reflection and celebration. Please treat it with the same respect you would any other church or private garden.

  • Children are welcome but must be supervised, especially around the ponds and larger trees.

  • The gardens are wheelchair accessible.

  • There is no food or drink for sale (except during occasional special events) – but you are welcome to bring a picnic. Please no food or drink in the TreeChurch itself.

  • No dogs, other than assistance dogs.

  • No smoking or vaping, please.
